Tip: If you are unsure whether a light bulb contains mercury, look for the Hg symbol (the elemental symbol for mercury) on the bulb. Some light bulbs may also be labeled with the words “contains mercury.” Download our Light Identification Guide for more tips.

  • Characteristics

    Any length, diameter or light output, straight, linear, curved or circular configuration (curved, square, U-shaped, etc.) Tanning bed tubes belong to this category.

    A compact fluorescent light has a spiral tube to indicate the presence of mercury in the light. The tube may or may not be contained inside a glass bulb cover. If covered, it may come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

    HID bulbs (mercury vapour, high-pressure sodium, and metal halide) vary in size and are bigger than conventional bulbs (CFLs). They are identified by the second glass inside the bulb. They are primarily used in commercial, industrial, or public spaces (warehouses, street lighting, parking lots, sports fields, etc.). Xenon automotive headlights are also accepted.
